XOSIZE RACE 3 - ELWOOD - CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS - 22nd January 2012
Elwood is a wonderful location for a Triathlon and weather gods smiled upon us providing perfect racing conditions. The council has done a great job cleaning up the Elwood beach and the water was beautiful and clear. I swam after the race and I don't think I've ever seen so many fish during a bay swim.
Peter was the pre-race favourite, and he was so confident, and the water so beautiful, he decided to take a detour and swim an extra 100 metres. Heidi, the female pre-race favourite, was also confident and clocked up a lazy 8 hour training session the day before.
With Peter's self imposed handicap, Courtney and Peter hit the bike leg together with David Gorman not far behind. Courtney was a fraction faster in T2 and led Peter out onto the first run. Unfortunately when Courtney arrived at T3 his goggles were nowhere to be seen and he was forced to do the second swim Jeremy style. This was all the advantage Peter needed and taking a more direct route on the second swim he established a race winning gap. David tried to close to gap to Courtney but despite a brilliant last run could only get within 18 seconds.
Bill claimed he was going to do the race at Ironman pace, but a little calculation on his splits would result in an Ironman time of 9h04m (swim 44m, bike 5h18m, run 3h02m), maybe we should expect great things from Bill come March. Brady was able to hold onto Bill during the bike leg, but after that great effort, Brady decided to reward himself with a picnic in T2. Bill was already out of sight before Brady remembered there was a run leg and he never saw Bill again. A little way behind, Alistair and Jeremy were traveling well on the first half of the race, but they were about to experience a big surprise in the form of Heidi.
Coming off a big training day, Heidi took the first half out conservatively, but then unleashed the speed for the second half. Whilst Alistair and Jeremy were casually wading out for a leisurely paddle, otherwise known as the second swim, Heidi stormed passed them porpoising through the shallows like a pro. Only 2 people negative split the race and it was no surprise that Heidi was one of them. Heidi cleared away from Alistair and Jeremy on the second swim and bike, but a very impressive effort from Alistair on the last run saw him narrowly beat Heidi by 13 seconds.
The other person to negative split was Jan - no surprise she was Club Champion with such a well paced race. Isabelle looked to have the better of Jan in the first half, but Jan's years of experience saw her slowly pull away as the race wore on. Most people were 2 minutes slower on the second swim (long extra lead up run and no wetsuit), but Jan was only 1m21s slower. And she improved in every other spit (T4 - 26s, Bike - 12s, T5 - 9s, Run - 10s). A lot of people managed to have a faster final run, but only Jan and Heidi were faster on their second bike leg.
The final battle was between Elaine & Tania. Tania led out of the water, but Elaine's recent bike training saw her take the lead on the bike. At the end of the 2nd swim there was less than 10 metres separating the two, but again Elaine's bike strength was the difference. Elaine's win turns the tables from the last race where Tania beat Elaine by a similar margin, and Elaine's great effort saw her come 2nd in the Club Championship.
