GIJON, SPAIN - 2011 AGE GROUP DUATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
A Race report from Bill
The 2011 Duathlon World Championships were held in the beautiful town of Gijon, Spain. Gijon is on the north coast of Spain. It has two fabulous beaches and is surrounded by rolling green hills. Gijon is a fabulously clean place, no litter, no graffiti, no glass on the roads and has many immaculate parks and gardens. To top it off the people are very friendly and courteous to cyclists.
I did the sprint race which was a 5.2km run / 19.2km cycle / 2.6km run.
The pace as you would expect was just really fast even the old fellows (55 to 59 yo) were fast.
I did the first 2km of the run at 3min 52sec per km pace and I was near the back of the field. I ran the rest of the first run a bit slower and averaged 4min 08sec pace. The first half of the cycle was up a steady 6km long hill (average 3.9%) followed by a fantastically fast and technical decent - something like 2 Bays Road except longer. I stayed in the aero bars the whole decent and arrived at the bottom white knuckled but having passed a lot of people. The rest of the race was just fast and a bit a blur - my second run was a modest 4min 4sec pace compared to the sprinting of other people.
I finished 10th in a time of 1hr 11min 28sec. - that was about as fast as I could go with the training that I had done.
All up a great experience. Jennie and I are staying the next few days in San Sebastian and then visit my daughter who is studying in Munich.
All the best to everyone.
